For a course on exploring urban spaces through the means of language and literary devices, I was researching my home street of Vapaudenkatu in Pori. We were asked to choose a rhetorical device and to look for it on the street of our choosing. At the end of the street, I found a well-maintained wasteland area delineated by vision blocking greenery and road architecture not used by the citizens, perfect for the device I chose, simile. By hosting a picnic in the area, complete with colourful banners, soap bubbles and finger food, we subverted the architecture of limiting fences and unwelcoming hedges and momentarily used the area as a park, the wasteland becoming a simile for a park.
